There is just something about a poke cake that I adore. They are one of the easiest types of cake. It started with my S'mores Poke Cake, then a Butterfinger Poke Cake and Jello Poke Cake more recently. They are different types of cake but both were equally delicious and fun. Now this Black Forest Poke Cake is so tasty with the chocolate and cherry combo, you will not be sorry you made it and will see it disappear quickly.

What is Black Forest Poke Cake?

Black Forest Poke Cake is a chocolate cake that is poked with holes after baking and then filled with a chocolate fudge and sweet cherry filling, topped with whipped cream, and often garnished with chocolate shavings and more cherries.

Can I freeze this cake?

You can freeze the cake, but it's best to do so before adding the whipped topping. Wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and add the whipped topping and garnishes before serving.

How do I prevent my cake from becoming too soggy?

Poke the holes while the cake is still warm, but not hot.
Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the whipped topping.
Use just enough filling to soak into the holes without overwhelming the cake.

Top Tips

  • The best way to make chocolate shavings on top, is to freeze the chocolate bar first, then use a grater or chop it into pieces.
  • Make sure the cake is completely cool before spreading on the whipped topping or it will melt.
  • When poking the holes in the cake, you can use a fork, end of a wooden spoon for larger holes, or a wooden skewer.
  • When spreading the hot fudge, you want the cake to still be hot so it will soak into the cake better.
  • Store your poke cake in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it. If there are leftovers, cover the cake and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • To freeze the cake, place in an airtight container, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

How to make Black Forest Poke Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13" baking dish with nonstick spray. Prepare boxed cake mix, according to box instructions.

  2. Once cake is done, allow it to cool 5-10 minutes. While cake is still warm, using a fork, wooden skewer or the end of a wooden spoon, slowly poke holes all over your cake.

  3. Microwave the jar of hot fudge, 30 seconds at a time, until it is thinned out and can be poured. Then, slowly pour the hot fudge over the cake evenly, hitting all of the holes.

  4. Spread cherry pie filling on top of the hot fudge.

  5. Cover cake and allow it to cool in refrigerator at least one hour. After an hour, spread whipped topping over top of the cherries.

  • 1 can cherry pie filling (21 oz)
  • 8 oz whipping topping (Cool Whip)
  • 1 chocolate bar for shavings
