FAQs

What are Mexican Wedding Cookies?

Mexican Wedding Cookies are buttery, nutty cookies rolled in powdered sugar. They are known for their crumbly texture and melt-in-your-mouth quality. These cookies are often enjoyed during festive occasions and celebrations.

Can I use different types of nuts?

Yes, you can use a variety of nuts such as pecans, walnuts, almonds, or even hazelnuts. Make sure to finely chop the nuts for the best texture.

Why do the cookies have to be rolled in powdered sugar twice?

The first coating of powdered sugar helps to create a sweet exterior and sticks better while the cookies are warm. The second coating ensures a more generous and even layer of powdered sugar once the cookies have cooled.

How do I keep the cookies from becoming too crumbly?

To keep the cookies from becoming too crumbly, make sure to measure your flour accurately. Too much flour can make the dough too dry. Also, be gentle when mixing in the nuts and forming the dough balls.

Top Tips

  • Don't allow your butter to be too soft or the cookies will spread. You want cold and softened but not mushy.
  • Use a small cookie scoop or a tablespoon, then roll in your hands to make the balls.
  • Chop the pecans small so they are distributed more evenly in the cookies.
  • Rolling the cookies in the powdered sugar is an important step so the sugar sticks to the cookies. It will likely make the cookies wet and sticky, that is okay. You will roll a second time to get the sweet, powdery outer layer.
  • To store, place in an airtight container up to 4 days. Add a slice of bread to the cookie container to increase the shelf life. Replace the bread as needed (it will get stale as it helps keep your cookies fresh).
