Making cinnamon roll dump cake is basically the lazy baker’s dream come true. You just toss the cinnamon rolls into the pan, sprinkle everything else on top, and let the oven do all the heavy lifting. No kneading, no mixing—just pure, gooey cinnamon goodness that comes out looking and smelling like you spent way more time than you did. It’s cozy, effortless, and dangerously easy to justify making “just because.”

FAQs

What is cinnamon roll dump cake?

It’s a super easy dessert made by layering canned cinnamon rolls, topping them with frosting, then a cake mix and butter—no mixing required!

Can I use any brand of cinnamon rolls?

Yes! Pillsbury is most common, but any refrigerated cinnamon rolls will work.

Do I need to prepare the cake mix first?

Nope! Just sprinkle the dry cake mix right on top—no eggs, no oil, no fuss.

Should the icing packets be used?

Definitely! Drizzle the icing on after baking for extra sweetness and that classic cinnamon-roll look.

How do I know when it’s done?

The top should look golden and the center should be set. It usually takes 35–45 minutes depending on your oven.

Top Tips

  • Cut the cinnamon rolls into pieces-Quarter them so they bake evenly and create those delicious pockets of gooey cinnamon throughout the dish.
  • Don’t mix the layers! The magic happens when everything bakes together as-is.
  • Dot the top with butter-Adding thin slices or melted butter over the cake mix helps it brown and cook through—no dry patches!
  • Serve warm-It’s at its gooey, cinnamon-swirled best right out of the oven.
  • Let it cool for 5–10 minutes before serving so the layers can settle but stay deliciously gooey.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 15–25 seconds to bring back the warm, gooey goodness.
  • To freeze the cake, place slices in an airtight container, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

How to make Cinnamon Roll Dump Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Open the cans of cinnamon rolls and cut each roll into quarters. Spread them out evenly in the baking dish.

  2. Open the frosting can and microwave for 10 seconds, then spread over the cinnamon rolls. Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix on top of the cinnamon rolls. Don’t stir! Just let it sit on top.

  3. Place thinly sliced butter over the dry cake mix. Cover as much as possible.

  4. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar from the boxed mix on top, along with ¾ cup chopped pecans. Bake 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden and bubbly on the sides.

  5. Remove from oven, cool slightly. Microwave the frosting packs from the cinnamon roll cans, about 10 seconds. Spread over the top of the warm cake. Serve warm and enjoy!
