FAQs

Can I use any kind of beer?

A mild lager gives the bread a mellow flavor, while a stout adds a deeper, malty taste. An IPA can make the bread taste more bitter, so choose one you enjoy.

Can I use self-rising flour?

Yes! Replace the all-purpose flour with the same amount of self-rising flour and leave out the baking powder and salt.

Can I make beer bread with nonalcoholic beer?

Absolutely! Use 12 ounces of nonalcoholic beer in place of regular beer.

Why is my beer bread dense?

Beer bread naturally has a hearty texture, but too much flour or overmixing can make it heavy. Spoon and level your flour, then stir just until no dry flour remains.

Why pour the butter over the top?

The butter creates a golden, flavorful crust and runs down the sides as the bread bakes. No need to mix it into the batter!

How do I store beer bread?

Once completely cool, wrap it tightly or place it in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Pro Tips for the Best Beer Bread
⭐ Measure the flour by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling it off. Too much flour can make the bread dry.
⭐ Stir only until everything is combined because overmixing can make the loaf tough.
⭐ A light lager creates a mild flavor, while an amber ale produces a richer, maltier bread.
⭐ Store the cooled loaf tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to three days. Freeze individual slices for up to three months.
⭐ Make it your own. Fold in shredded cheddar, chopped jalapeños, or a little garlic powder before transferring the batter to the pan.

How to make Easy Beer Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

  2. Pour in the beer and stir just until combined. The batter will be thick and lumpy.

  3. Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly. Pour all ½ cup of melted butter evenly over the top. It may pool around the edges, which is normal.

  4. Bake for 45-55 minutes, until deeply golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing and slicing. Enjoy!
