Easy French Toast recipe is a delight for the mouth. It has a crispy outer texture with a soft, creamy interior that is just slightly sweet. It goes well with almost any breakfast variation from fresh fruit and cream to maple syrup, peanut butter, banana, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

My husband and I grew up on French toast thinking it was just bread dipped in beaten eggs. It never occurred to us to order it at a restaurant or to think about it in another way. One day on a food show, we saw someone make a custard French toast. The first time we actually made it this way at home, we fell in love. My husband made it as a stuffed French toast for me with peanut butter and banana inside, and it was delicious. Give them a try!

FAQs

What is French toast?

French toast is a classic breakfast dish made by soaking slices of bread in a mixture of beaten eggs, milk, and spices, then frying them until golden brown. It's often served with toppings like syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, or whipped cream.

What type of bread is best for French toast?

Thick-cut, slightly stale bread works best as it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming too soggy. Popular choices include brioche, challah, French baguette, and Texas toast.

Can I freeze French toast?

Yes, French toast can be frozen. Cook the French toast, let it cool, and then freeze the slices on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer the slices to a freezer bag. Reheat directly from frozen in a toaster, oven, or skillet.

How do I prevent French toast from being soggy?

To prevent soggy French toast, use slightly stale bread and be careful not to soak the bread too long in the egg mixture. Also, ensure your skillet is properly preheated before cooking.

Top Tips

  • Any kind of milk (1%, 2%, or whole milk), half and half, or heavy cream all work great. You can even use almond milk or coconut milk.
  • Whatever bread you choose, do not use sandwich bread. It will get too soggy and fall apart.
  • The best bread to use is stale/day old bread, which will soak up the egg mixture like a sponge. We set ours out the night before, on a cookie rack, over a sheet pan and allow the bread to dry out.
  • There are many toppings you could use with French toast, such as maple syrup, butter, berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries), Nutella, peanut butter, bananas, powdered sugar, chocolate chips, cinnamon, whipped cream, to name a few.

How to make French Toast

  1. You will need stale/day old bread for this French toast. Lay the bread on a cooling rack or baking sheet overnight. The more of the bread's surface area is exposed to the air, the more evenly and quicker it will dry out.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, honey, vanilla, salt. Pour into a pie pan or flat bottom pan.

  3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture and let it soak the egg for about 30 seconds per side. Once dipped, place on a wire rack which is on top of a sheet pan or cooking sheet. I also add a piece of parchment under the wire rack to catch egg drippings.

  4. Continue to dip each piece of bread. Allow to rest on cooling rack for 1-2 minutes.

  5. In a 10 inch pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Cook 2 slices of bread at a time in the pan, until golden brown on both sides.
