Berry Trifle is one of those desserts that always steals the show, no matter the occasion. I love how the colorful layers of fresh berries, fluffy cream, and soft cake come together into a dessert that's just as pretty as it is delicious. It's one of my favorite make-ahead desserts because it's simple to prepare, easy to customize with seasonal fruit, and always gets rave reviews from family and friends.

  • blackberries
  • raspberries
  • blueberries
  • angel food cake
  • Cool Whip
  • vanilla, cheesecake, or white chocolate pudding
  • milk
  • cream cheese (optional)
  • powdered sugar (optional)

Can I make Berry Trifle ahead of time?

Yes! It's best made 4-24 hours in advance so the cake can absorb some of the creamy filling without becoming too soft.

Can I use frozen berries?

Fresh berries are recommended for the best texture and appearance. If using frozen berries, thaw and drain them well before layering.

How long does Berry Trifle last?

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It's best enjoyed within the first 24-48 hours.

What other flavors work well?

Try lemon pudding, cheesecake pudding, or white chocolate pudding for delicious variations.

Pro Tips for the Best Berry Trifle

⭐Pat the berries dry after washing to keep the layers from becoming watery.
⭐ Assemble the trifle a few hours before serving so the flavors have time to meld.
⭐ Use pound cake for a richer dessert or angel food cake for a lighter version.
⭐ Save a few of the prettiest berries for decorating the top.
⭐ A little lemon zest folded into the filling adds a fresh, bright flavor.
⭐ Serve in individual mason jars or dessert cups for parties and picnics.

How to make Easy Berry Trifle

  1. Wash berries and set on a paper towel to dry. Cut strawberries into bite sized pieces.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk for about 2 minutes. Let it stand for 5 minutes to thicken.

  3. This cheesecake layer is optional. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

  4. In a large trifle dish or clear glass bowl, add a layer of cake cubes.

  5. Spread a layer of the cheesecake filling over the cake, if using.

  6. Spread a layer of pudding over the cake cubes or cheesecake filling (if you are including that).

  7. Next, layer on whipped cream and berries.
  8. Repeat layers. Top with extra whipped topping and decorate with fresh berries. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
