When the weather turns cooler, it is time to break out the crock pot and hot chocolate. Although I will drink this even in the middle of summer, but something feels so right about that warm mug when it is so cold outside. It is so easy to grab the hot chocolate packets at the store, but this is so much tastier and creamier!

FAQs

What variations can I try for different flavors?

Peppermint Hot Chocolate: Add a few drops of peppermint extract or crushed peppermint candies.
Mexican Hot Chocolate: Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Mocha Hot Chocolate: Stir in a shot of espresso or strong coffee.
Caramel Hot Chocolate: Add caramel sauce or use caramel-flavored sweetened condensed milk.

How can I make the hot chocolate thicker or thinner?

Thicker Hot Chocolate: Use more heavy cream and less milk, or add a bit of cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with cold water) to the hot chocolate during the cooking process.
Thinner Hot Chocolate: Add more milk to reach the desired consistency.

How do I prevent the hot chocolate from scorching or burning?

Stir the hot chocolate occasionally during cooking to ensure even melting of the chocolate chips and to prevent the mixture from scorching. Keeping the crockpot on a low setting will also help avoid burning.

Top Tips

  • Cocoa powder does not always combine well, until it heats up a little.
  • Use semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips in the same amount. I tried it with 2 cups of milk chocolate and again with 1 cup of semi-sweet. I prefer the semi-sweet, but milk chocolate gives you good chocolate creaminess too.
  • Have toppings on hand to make this drink even more fun. Toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, chocolate shavings, crushed candy canes, toffee bits or even ground cinnamon.
  • Store in an airtight container or mason jars, in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
