FAQs

What is Mississippi Pot Roast?

Mississippi Pot Roast is a flavorful, tender roast made with a few simple ingredients: a chuck roast, ranch seasoning mix, au jus gravy mix, pepperoncini peppers, and butter. It's cooked slowly in a slow cooker until the meat is incredibly tender and infused with the tangy, savory flavors of the seasonings and peppers.

Can I use a different cut of meat?

While a chuck roast is the traditional choice for Mississippi Pot Roast due to its marbling and tenderness when slow-cooked, you can use other cuts such as a rump roast or brisket. Keep in mind that the texture may vary slightly.

Do I need to brown the roast before putting it in the slow cooker?

Browning the roast is optional. Browning can enhance the flavor by adding a caramelized crust, but it is not necessary for a delicious result. If you choose to brown it, do so in a hot skillet with a bit of oil before adding it to the slow cooker.

What can I serve with Mississippi Pot Roast?

This roast pairs well with mashed potatoes or cauliflower mash, rice or quinoa, roasted or steamed vegetables, crusty bread or rolls, or a green salad for a lighter side.

Top Tips

  • The best roast is a well-marbled chuck roast for the juiciest and most flavorful result. The marbling contributes to the tender meat during the slow-cooking process.
  • Patience is important with Mississippi Pot Roast. Set your slow cooker on low to allow the flavors to meld and the meat to become fork-tender. This low-and-slow approach ensures a melt-in-your-mouth experience.
  • Adjust the number of pepperoncini peppers to suit your spice preference. The peppers not only add a kick but also infuse the roast with a unique tangy flavor. Don't be afraid to experiment with the quantity to find your perfect balance.
  • The au jus created during the cooking process is liquid gold. Spoon it over the roast when serving for an extra burst of flavor. You can also use it as a dipping sauce or drizzle it over mashed potatoes or rice. Thicken it up with cornstarch and water, if desired. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1-2 tablespoons of cold water and then stir into the crockpot. Allow it to cook for an additional 15-30 minutes on the low setting, or until the sauce thickens to your liking.
  • Mississippi Pot Roast pairs wonderfully with creamy mashed potatoes, rice, or even buttered egg noodles. The sides help soak up the delicious juices and complement the richness of the roast.
  • Any leftovers? Place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
