FAQs

What is Easter Dirt Cake?

Easter Dirt Cake is a fun, no-bake dessert made with layers of chocolate pudding, whipped topping, and crushed chocolate cookies, decorated with festive Easter candies.

What cookies work best for dirt cake?

Chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos) are the classic choice for that perfect “dirt” look and flavor.

Can I make it in individual cups?

Yes! Layering the dirt cake in small cups or jars makes it perfect for parties and easy serving.

How do I store Easter Dirt Cake?

Cover and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Keep it chilled until ready to serve.

Can I freeze dirt cake?

Freezing isn’t recommended, as the texture of the pudding and whipped topping can become watery once thawed.

Top Tips

  • Use fine cookie crumbs for the best “dirt” texture-pulse cookies in a food processor for an even consistency.
  • Let the cake chill at least 2-4 hours so the layers set and flavors meld together. Fold the whipped topping gently into the pudding to keep the mixture light and fluffy.
  • Use cold milk when making pudding to help it thicken properly. Fold gently when mixing whipped topping to keep the filling light and fluffy.
  • Add toppings last (like candy eggs or Peeps) so they stay bright and don’t melt.
  • Make it ahead—it actually tastes better the next day.
  • Get creative with decorations—this is the fun part, especially for kids!

How to make Easter Dirt Cake

  1. In a food processor or large Ziploc bag, crush 32-36 Oreo cookies into fine crumbs.
  2. Spread about ⅔ of the Oreo crumbs into an even layer in the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan. Set aside the remaining crumbs for the “dirt” topping. Refrigerate the crust while you prepare the filling.

  3. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine softened cream cheese and butter. Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

  4. Fold in 16 oz. whipped topping until well incorporated.

  5. In another large bowl, whisk 2 boxes of instant pudding, milk and vanilla, until thickened.

  6. Fold pudding mixture into the cream cheese mixture. Remove dish from refrigerator and evenly layer filling on top of the cookie crumbs.

Cream cheese mixture spread over cookie crumbs.
  7. Spread the rest of the cookie crumbs over top, creating that "dirt" layer. Sprinkle the rest of the crushed cookies on top.

  8. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Decorate with candy (Peeps, Robin's Eggs, jelly beans, edible grass) before serving. Keep refrigerated. Scoop and enjoy!
