Sugar cookies are probably the most common homemade cookie, besides the chocolate chip cookie. It often gives memories of families at the holidays decorating cookies, cutting out shapes or using a cookie press. There is something to be said about sugar cookies and milk. Although I can eat them anytime of the year but they always make me think of Christmas.

Try some of our other cookie recipes, such as Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies, Soft Ginger Molasses Cookies, Cinnamon Chip Cookies, or Easy Brownie Cookies.

Ingredients

sugar cookie recipe ingredients laid out on countertop
  • unsalted butter
  • granulated sugar
  • egg
  • vanilla extract
  • all purpose flour
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • baking powder
  • extra granulated sugar for rolling

Tips

  • Allow your eggs to come to room temperature for a better mix with the dough.
  • Refrain from overbeating the dough or your cookies will come out too dense and more tough. Only mix until just combined.
  • If you're looking for a uniform shape, use a cookie scoop to place on cookie sheets.
  • Remove cookies from oven when they are just starting to turn golden, undercooked a little is okay as they will finish cooking when they rest.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare your cookie sheet/sheet pan with parchment paper or silicone baking pad.
  2. Combine your dry ingredients-flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda in a bowl.
  3. Mix together in a stand mixer or a large bowl, your softened butter and white sugar on medium speed until well blended.
