What is the best alcohol for hot chocolate? My favorite is Kahlua. However, there are many other types of alcohol that are just as delicious in hot cocoa. Do you like peppermint, try peppermint schnapps. Or give Bailey's Irish Cream a try! Spiced rum, dark rum, vanilla vodka or even bourbon. Give it a try and let us know your favorite in the comments!

Try some of our other favorite drinks, such as Dirty Roy Rogers, Dirty Shirley, The Best Pina Colada, or the Delicious Strawberry Daiquiri.

FAQs

What type of alcohol works best in hot chocolate?

Baileys Irish Cream: Adds a creamy, rich flavor.
Kahlua: Adds a coffee-flavored kick.
Peppermint Schnapps: Adds a minty freshness.
Bourbon: Adds warmth and depth.
Rum: Adds a sweet and spicy flavor.

How can I make my hot chocolate thicker?

For a thicker hot chocolate, you can add a bit of cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of cold water) to the hot chocolate mixture while it's heating. Stir constantly until it thickens to your desired consistency.

What toppings go well with Alcoholic Hot Chocolate?

Whipped cream
Marshmallows
Chocolate shavings
Cocoa powder
Crushed peppermint candies
Caramel sauce
Cinnamon sticks

Top Tips

  • Cocoa powder does not always combine well, until it heats up a little.
  • Use semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips in the same amount. I tried it with 2 cups of milk chocolate and again with 1 cup of semi-sweet. I prefer the semi-sweet, but milk chocolate gives you good chocolate creaminess too.
  • Have toppings on hand to make this drink even more fun. Toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, chocolate shavings, crushed candy canes, toffee bits or even ground cinnamon.
