Pina Colada drinks served in daiquiri glasses with umbrellas.

This is the perfect cold and refreshing fruity drink for summertime! It makes you feel like you are on a beach somewhere, beside a pool or just daydreaming about it. We used to buy the bottle of pina colada mix from our grocery store where you just add rum . There is no need to buy any type of premade mixes when this is so simple and tastes better. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Origin: The story about the original pina colada says that in 1954, bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero of the Caribe Hilton in San Juan created a new cocktail. He felt it captured the essence of Puerto Rico.

Try some of our other favorites, such as Strawberry Daiquiri, Coconut Sheet Cake, or our delicious Honey Bun Cake.

FAQs

What is a Piña Colada?

A Piña Colada is a classic tropical cocktail made with rum, coconut cream or coconut milk, and pineapple juice. It's often blended with ice to create a smooth, creamy, and refreshing drink, perfect for summer.

Can I use a different type of rum?

Yes, while white rum is traditional, you can also use dark rum or even flavored rums like coconut or pineapple for a different twist.

Can I use fresh pineapple?

Yes, fresh pineapple can be used for a more natural flavor. Blend the fresh pineapple chunks with the other ingredients. You might need to adjust the sweetness since fresh pineapple can vary in sweetness.

Top Tips

  • To make a non-alcoholic version (also known as a Virgin Piña Colada), simply omit the rum. The drink will still be delicious and refreshing.
  • If you don't have a blender, you can shake the ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a glass over crushed ice. The texture will be less smooth but still tasty.
  • Coco Lopez brand is the most recommended brand of cream of coconut. You want cream of coconut and not coconut milk or coconut cream.
